Also, slight variations could be applicable to enhance speed like allowing certain percentage differences based on time in queue with the difference widening by time, essentially allowing for what we have now. A 60% and 40% player average 50% and so do two 50% players. There is also the possibility of simply doing a bit of an average win rate for each team. For example just making large brackets like a specific number of players in categories like 40 to 48%, 49 to 55%, and 56% and above it would not take as long. If you expand and generalize a skill based system it doesn't have to take forever but it will add more time. Matching 1 for 1 in a small MM is going to difficult. I'm not sure if brawls is looking for an exact number of winning matches and then very slow expands to slight variations or not. This is what will happen if WG implements it to Randoms or other modes. This is what people ask for when they complain about how "terrible" MM is, lol.
